There are Seven Orphanages located throughout Bali. In those seven caring, nurturing homes children from desperately poor circumstances are nurtured and grown into fine, self-sufficient members of the Balinese society.

The Widhya Asih Foundation

Widhya Asih means: Knowledge and Love

The Widhya Asih Foundation is a Christian based non-profit organization committed to helping the impoverished people of Bali break their entrenched cycle of poverty through education, providing fresh water and other essentials of life, and offering health care to those having no practical access.

To this end the Foundation operates:

  • Seven Orphanages
  • Three Community Development Projects
  • One Mobile Health Care Program

The Foundation is led by Nengah Swikrama.  We originally met him in is role as the Director of the orphanage in Untal-Untal. Then, in December of 2008 he was promoted to Director of the entire Foundation.  Nengah is an outstanding leader with advanced training in managing large-scale social services enterprises.  Along with a small staff of highly dedicated individuals, the Widhya Foundation is serving an important need in this small, relatively poor island.  As a testimony to their fine work, they have consisttently received high marks when evaluated by the Indonesian government.

A Five-Year Strategic Plan for the Foundation

Under Nengah's leadership, the Foundation staff and governing Board of Directors is working to develop a comprehensive Five-Year Strategic Plan.

Important elements of this plan include continuing to concentrate on the most pressing needs of impoverished people and to serve in the most cost effective and efficient manner.  Along these lines, Sustainability for the Foundation and all of its services is an important priority.  The Foundation is committed to finding ways to become as self-supporting as possible.  In this regard, one strategic imperative is for each individual orphanage (and the Foundation itself) to create and maintain a small business, thereby earning for themselves a portion of their annual financial needs.  In doing this they also provide the children of the orphanage with important training in life and occupational skills.

The most pressing needs identified as part of the Strategic Planning Process are described for each of the Orphanages and other Foundation activities.

Orphanages Activities

The Orphanages have various activities and chores to get the children involved with everyday life, build skills, enhance community, and encourage self-esteem.  Some activities include Choir, Cooking, Dancing, Crafts, Kulintang, and much more!
