Frequently Asked Questions
Why are you - Bill & Pat - doing this?
This opportunity simply showed up in our lives at a time when we were open to it, and the need was just too compelling to not get involved. Moreover, for us at least, this was an extremely personal, one-on-one experience well beyond simply writing a check. With this involvement we know without any doubt that we are making an important difference in the lives of these fine girls.
How can I become involved?
There are many opportunities for you. You could sponsor a girl. You could help us fund the many needs identified at the individual orphanages. You could adopt an orphanage and arrange sponsorships for the children there, as we have done for Untal-Untal. You could mobilize your friends and family members to fund and support a particular project. The opportunities are virtually limitless.
Are these children really orphans?
No, most are not orphans, per se. They are children from extremely poor families who could not possibly provide for their education if they were not in the orphanage.
Why are these children at the orphanage?
Because it is their only hope for an education and a chance at a better life. Government schools in Indonesia are not free. School costs an average of US$17 per month, a daunting amount of money for unskilled workers who mght be able, if they can find work, to earn US$60 to $70 per month.
How much does it cost to sponsor a girl?
$400 per year covers housing, food, school fees, and related expenses. Quite the bargan, we think.
Does the entire $400 go to the orphanage?
Absolutely. We personally cover any administrative expenses so you can know with confidence that every penny of your contribution goes directly to the orphanage.
How is the $400 allocated?
$385 is used to cover the direct costs of food and school related expenses. The remaining $15 is used to provide each girl with two gifts from her sponsor. $5 on her birthday, and $10 at Christmas.
You often mention girls. Why are you supporting only girls?
First off, the orphanage at Untal-Untal is only for girls. That is where we started so naturally we supported girls. The other six orphanages are co-ed; however, for the time being, given the extra challenges typically faced by girls, we will continue to concentrate our assistance on girls.
How are children chosen to live at the orphanage?
Children are accepted in one of the orphanages only after extensive interviews with the child and parents to gain assurance that the child will work hard, study well, and fit into the culture of the orphanage... and that the parents will consistenlty support those efforts.
Is there a waiting list to move into the orphanage?
Yes, there certainly is. Far more children are hoping to gain access to the orphanages than there is capacity to accommodate them.
What happens to the girls after high school?
There are several alternatives at this point. Some of the children return to their families and seek work in their villages. Others find a family to live with in one of the larger cities or towns and seek employment there. Still others take advantage of the foundation's Scholarship Program and continue their education at available universities and trade schools.
You mentioned a Scholarship Fund?
We have established a separate Scholarship Fund maintained by the Foundation. Qualified high school graduates may submit, in writing, a request for a loan from the fund. The Scholarship Committee reviews all such applications and the most qualified individuals are awarded a loan for their first semester of study. With successful study results they will be eligible for subsequent loans for the duration of their approved study program. Although, by design, the loans carry no interest payments and no fixed repayment schedule, they do carry a strong ethical, moral commitment, in writing, to repay the loans so the next child can have a similar opportunity.
May I send the children gifts? What do they like?
Absolutely you may. The children always appreciate gifts. We suggest small gifts. Girly things are always appreciated. Or you could send a card with a bit of money included. You might want to be aware that shipping costs to Bali can be relatively expensive, sometimes equaling the value of the gift. Another alternative to keep in mind is our willingness to carry your small gifts in our suitcases whenever we visit Bali.
Money? How much money is appropriate?
Considering that the median monthly income for an unskilled person (presuming they are able to find work at all) is about $60 to $70 per month, a gift of between $5 and $20 is quite meaningful to the children.
Is it possible to visit the orphanage?
You are always welcome to visit. Just let us know. We will help you connect with the Director and convenient arrangements will be made.
Can I stay at the Orphanage?
Yes, you certainly may. Several of the orphanages, including Untal-Untal have guest rooms available for your visit. To make these arrangements you may contact the Orphanage Director directly, or we are happy to assist you.
